The Idaho Water Resources Research Institute is proud to announce the 2025 recipients of the Joseph Jordan IWRRI Student Research Fellowship, Dinesh Gulati and Turker Anlaroglu. Established by the family of Joseph Jordan, the fellowship provides financial assistance and hands-on experience to University of Idaho students pursuing careers in water resources management. Fellows work directly with agencies, Tribes, nonprofits, and industry partners to address real-world water challenges.

This year, both students contributed to a WaterSMART-funded project in collaboration with the City of Pocatello, quantifying hydrologic characteristics of the Portneuf River Basin. This opportunity provided experience in stakeholder-engaged research, accessible data tools, and scientific figure development.

Turker Anlaroglu’s graduate research with Dr. Jae Ryu focuses on drought management in Southern Idaho, and is evaluating new drought metrics to address limitations of existing tools.

Dinesh Gulati’s graduate research with Dr. Meetpal Kukal focuses on soil water accounting using a new modeling package that integrates surface runoff and climate data, assessing how increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) changes hydrologic processes and using novel techniques to quantify evapotranspiration.

Both fellows embody the fellowship’s mission, advancing water resource management through applied collaborative research. Interested in becoming a Joseph Jordan Fellow? Look for announcements here next spring for summer funding opportunities.
