Water Quality Data Inventory
The Water Quality Data Inventory brings together water quality monitoring programs and databases with data collected in Idaho. Use the filters to narrow the inventory to datasets that fit your research needs. Each card summarizes a monitoring program, including the collecting agency, key data categories and parameters, how to access the data, and links to the program and its datasets. Groundwater Quality Data
Analytical chemistry from wells statewide: nutrients, major ions, trace metals, radionuclides, organics and bacteria. Nitrate, arsenic, uranium and fluoride are the most-requested analytes.
DATA HELD BY
Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) — the Environmental Data Management System (EDMS)
CONTRIBUTORS
IDWR, Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Idaho State Department of Agriculture, state health districts, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Bureau of Reclamation, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
COVERAGE
Statewide; 870,000+ results from 6,000+ sites
WHERE TO GET IT
HOW TO ACCESS IT
To filter and subset data, use the EDMS groundwater quality map, or the IWRRI Groundwater Data Hub. For all EDMS data, download the zip file.
GOOD TO KNOW
EDMS is the designated state repository and the one place Idaho genuinely consolidated across agencies. Additional sample detail requires contacting the contributing agency.

Surface Water Quality Data
Discrete chemistry, field physical parameters, bacteria, and biological and habitat assessment data from streams, rivers and lakes.
DATA HELD BY
No single state warehouse — EPA’s Water Quality Exchange is the aggregation point
CONTRIBUTORS
Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), EPA, the Coeur d’Alene, Nez Perce, Shoshone-Bannock and Kootenai tribes, U.S. Forest Service, and QAPP-approved volunteer programs.
COVERAGE
Statewide; DEQ’s BURP alone covers 11,500+ sampled sites since 1993
WHERE TO GET IT
HOW TO ACCESS IT
To filter and download, use the API; BURP viewer is map and summary reports only
GOOD TO KNOW
Retrieval caveat worth knowing: the main Water Quality Portal interface serves WQX 2.2 profiles, which do not include USGS data added after 11 March 2024. Newer records are in the 3.0 beta. Sample-level BURP results generally require a request to DEQ.
