Snake River Waterkeeper
Job Summary

For the Summer 2024 semester, Boise-based nonprofit SNAKE RIVER WATERKEEPER seeks 2-4 Boise State
University undergraduates majoring in Environmental Studies or Environmental and Occupational Health Studies
to sample water quality across the Snake River Basin for its SWIM Guide app. Using an online widget and app
for iPhone® and Android, SWIM Guide helps people find nearby sites that are safe for swimming.
For the last 8 years, our staff and interns have sampled and monitored water quality at 28 sites along the Snake
River and its tributaries for parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, salinity, and total
dissolved solids. Data are evaluated, submitted to states for reporting, and used to power our SWIM Guide –
which generated more than 10,000 app downloads and 100,000 views of sites our intern team sampled in 2023!

Water Quality Interns will travel to sites across the Snake River Basin state-wide (including tributaries on the
Salmon and Clearwater rivers) to collect the water quality data that powers our SWIM Guide. Interns develop
skills to carry into a variety of environmental career paths during this unique opportunity for outdoor experiential
learning. Interns receive training on water quality issues and sampling methods, pollution sources and controls,
local community engagement, and natural resource accountability. Our project design, sampling protocols, and
Hach Rugged Field Monitoring Kit operation are straightforward and administered by students onsite in the field.
