Assistant/Associate Professor of Watershed Management and Hydrology

Job SummaryThe Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department (NRES) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking a full-time academic year, tenure-track Assistant/Associate professor position in watershed management and hydrology starting August 17, 2026.
Cal Poly has a tradition of excellence in teaching and scholarship that supports a curriculum centered on a “Learn by Doing” philosophy and focused on preparing graduates to make a positive impact on their world day one. The ideal candidate will show a strong ability to teach courses in support of the undergraduate majors of Forestry and Fire Science, Earth and Soil Science, and Environmental Protection and Management as well as new courses related to curriculum enhancement and the candidate’s scholarship as needed. Emphasis for teaching in the Forest and Fire Sciences major is preferred.
The teaching and scholarship area of the ideal candidate would broadly center on surface hydrology that addresses the range of economic, climatic and conservation challenges facing forests, working lands and natural environments in the western United States. These include aspects of watershed assessment, riparian ecology, watershed and stream restoration, soil erosion and control, stormwater, and stream ecology. Applicants with a demonstrated ability to partner with the forest industry, environmental consulting, agricultural industry and other stakeholders to advance teaching and scholarship are encouraged to apply. A vision and ability to leverage Cal Poly’s Swanton Pacific Ranch to enhance education, advance applied scholarship, and strengthen Cal Poly’s connection with the forest industry, agricultural industry, various environmental groups, and other relevant public and private stakeholders are considered strengths.
Rank and salary commensurate with education and experience of the individual selected. Anticipated hiring ranges:
Assistant Professor: $90,948 – $105,156
Associate Professor: $105,492 – $114,720
Required Qualifications:
Doctorate degree focused on watershed science or wildland hydrology or surface hydrology, or related field by start date with a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered but must provide proof that the doctorate was awarded prior to the start of appointment. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication and interpersonal skills. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students, and partnerships with key stakeholders. Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as demonstrated ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings are required. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. This position provides management, support, direction and training for administrative and financial staff. It also oversees communication and interaction with college support staff for personnel processes and works closely with university offices to research rules, regulations, processes and procedures, provide interpretations and make recommendations to administrators, departments and supervisors.Duties may include:- Coordinate all human resource processes for the unit with Human Resources

Research Scientist I

Job SummaryServes as an independent researcher, or a collaborator on a multi-scholar research initiative. May have lead responsibility for discrete components of a larger project under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher.
Duties may include:- Perform complex scientific analyses
- Adjust experimental designs as necessary based on experimental data analysis
- Direct the development of recommendations for project solutions
- Perform peer review of scientific projects, studies, or applications and making recommendations
- Prepare peer reviewed publications or presentations
- Resolve complex project specific technical and regulatory issues
- Establish work priorities and performance standards, hiring, training, evaluating staff, assigning, and reviewing work
- May be responsible for technical project management to include developing the scope of work, budgeting, scheduling, reporting, implementing field projects, and approving scientific documents
- Participate in the development of grant proposals as named project contributor
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience:
- Three years of research experience related to the domain of this position
Required Education:
- Doctoral Degree in Hydrology, Engineering, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or other related discipline. A Master’s Degree plus an additional two years of research experience (Five years total) may be substituted for a Ph.D.
Additional Preferred:
- Experience with experimental design and complex data analysis
- Demonstrating ability to work independently
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: big data analytics, hydrologic modeling, remote sensing, machine learning
- Technical proficiency with quantitative data analytics and workflows (e.g. R, Python, GIS, GitHub)
- Experience with machine learning, Google Earth Engine, remote sensing data
- Geovisualization of hydrologic data
- Experience conducting interdisciplinary or community-engaged research and demonstrated success in working collaboratively across disciplines with a range of stakeholders
